Janet Jackson's Boob -- This is news?

Let me tell you I was shocked, shocked to see Janet Jackson's boob at the SuperBowl Halftime show on Sunday. Ok, no I wasn't shocked. For those of you who don't know, Justin Timberlake removed a piece of Janet Jackson's brassiere at the end of the halftime show, flashing her right breast (see the photo that I managed to screen grab, if you wish to see it).

The truth is, after it happened I didn't think much of it. But somehow the media has been making a big stink about it, CBS says that MTV will no longer be doing the halftime show and apologized at a news conference, the FCC is investigating, the NFL is apologizing, it's all over the news, Jay Leno is cracking jokes at it--it's getting a helluva lot of (undeserved) attention.

If everyone just yawned (as was most people's first reaction, probably) at the boring lip-syncing performers dancing to bad music at the halftime show, no one would have thought twice about it. Instead, a little boob flash has given Janet and Justin all of the media attention they could ever want. Is this culturally significant?

Of course, you may say I'm contributing to this madness by putting this on my site. :P
